Transferring knowledge and technology from university to industry by New- Technology- Based Firms (NTBFs) is a strategy that has been implemented in Iran in the recent decades (or the last decade). However, it seems that this strategy has failed to lead to a significant change in the domestic industry. In this paper, we attempt to analyze academic NTBFs and aim to develop a model for a better understanding of the growth process of the firms by answering three essential questions. First, how should the firms be classified according to their business strategy. Second, what transformative phases did the firms face to achieve sustainable success? Finally, what were the contribution variables in each transformative phase? This study is based in theory and in-depth interviews with 20 CEOs and the members of the board of directors of 14 NTBFs that are located in Tehran University incubator, Tehran Science and Technology Park, and also in Sharif University incubator. Finally, we develop a seven-stage growth model identifying the driving factors and obstacles for each stage.
